Ever heard of the Google Chromebook? Not certain? You really must have, yeah, at some point. But then let’s run through its basics, I’m sure you’ll realize just how much you’ve missed out on if you don’t have one.

The latest Google Chromebooks are increasingly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of technology for their simplicity and stripped-down experience.

Google’s Chrome OS is very easy to use, quite affordable; costing as low as $299 and highly secured.

What is Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is an open-source lightweight alternative to the other popular operating systems often loaded onto computers, such as Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Keeping it simple, the only software loaded on a Chrome OS locally is the Chrome browser which is the heart of Chrome OS. So you’ll get all of your apps from the Chrome app store and Google will push all of the security updates to the machine automatically (similar to Windows and macOS).

Chrome OS has grown since it’s creation as it has received several great updates such as the ability to download apps from the Play Store and Android apps. Ever since this change, many people have decided to get Chromebooks.

What is a Chromebook?

In 2011 Google introduced a new type of laptop. These Chromebooks are similar to traditional laptops but are loaded with an operating system that is fast and lightweight, known as Chrome OS.

The Chromebook basically uses the Chrome browser for everything, such as streaming music, watching Netflix, and even photo editing. A bold move from the software giant, that has made a positive impact for the users that needed a simpler laptop experience. Now there are more than 35 million Chromebook owners in the world.

Is the Chromebook good for students?

The Chromebook is good for students that aren’t reliant on specific programs. If the user only plans to do some social media, Google Docs, Spotify, and video streaming then a Chromebook is probably a way to save money while having a way to do homework.

Chromebooks are good for students that,

  • has a reliable internet connection
  • is good at finding alternatives to popular apps, such as using Pixelr for photo editing instead of Photoshop
  • is okay with doing everything online, most of the popular social media, video streaming, and music streaming websites should work fine as they have a simple web app

Chromebooks are not good for students that,

  • want to play the biggest and newest video games, such as Fortnite
  • want to do any type of heavy video editing
  • are going to need a specific industry program, such as Adobe Illustrator for vector creation or Xcode for programming.
  • are totally invested in another ecosystem and need to access things, such as the Podcast app of macOS

If the student has access to a computer, a simple way to determine if a Chromebook is a good choice is… by using the Chrome browser for a day.

Test to see if all of the popular websites, streaming services, and music services are working properly with the Chrome browser.

If you’re able to do everything within the Chrome browser without relying on downloads or extra programs, then a Chromebook is good for the student.

How much does the Chromebook cost?

The relative affordability of the Chromebook is a reason you should get a Chromebook ASAP. In comparison to similar Windows laptops, the average price of a Chromebook is reasonably low and affordable. Many of the best Chromebooks are cheaper than their Windows counterparts.

There was a time when the only laptops priced under $250 were Chromebooks. Its relatively cheap price is a good reason why you should buy a Chromebook.

How secure is the Chromebook?

Chromebook offers users access to a few extra security features. A Chromebook automatically checks for and applies security updates. Also, Chrome OS doesn’t use flash, so any security issues arising from the use of flash won’t affect the system. If a foreign body gets into the Chrome OS system, restoring it back to factory settings remains only a few clicks away. The only security problem Chromebook has is the ability of thieves to hack the sites you use.

Luckily, the Trusted Platform Module included in Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Chromebook and Google’s Pixelbook is also a security chip that helps keep malicious attackers away from your passwords. Assured security is one of its strongest attributes and is a very good reason why you should buy a Chromebook.

Are there any apps for the Chromebook?

The Google Play store, which reportedly houses over 3,000,000 apps, in addition to those from the Chrome Web Store, which has thousands of its own titles offers versatility to users. Early, pre-release builds of Chrome OS revealed that Chromebooks will support Linux programs, satisfying demand from some of the more tech-savvy Chromebook owners.

Chromebooks are designed to rely heavily on the Internet, which means that many apps simply won’t work if you’re out of Wi-Fi range, but there are more than 200 offline Chrome apps that can work without Internet connectivity, including Gmail, Pocket and Google Drive, and tons of the Android apps coming soon will also work offline.

New features are being added to the best Chromebooks all the time to which further shows why you should buy a Chromebook. For instance, Google is developing a tablet mode for Chrome OS and AltOS,  which will allow users to install a second operating system. Plus, at Google I/O, Google showed off a ton of new tricks in the works for Chrome OS, like Linux apps, SD card compatibility for Android apps, and better stylus support. So, whether for work, play, or something in-between, there’s a Chromebook for you.

This means those Chromebooks can run an ever-growing library of programs, such as productivity tools including Microsoft Office and Wunderlist, games such as NBA Jam, Fallout Shelter and Super Mario Run and even Instagram, which PCs and Macs can’t.

How is the battery life for the Chromebook?

Chromebooks typically offer exceptional battery life. According to TechRadar, “Of the 10 Chromebooks they have reviewed in the past year, they have seen an average of 9 hours and 15 minutes of endurance on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi”.

The sustainability of their batteries is one of their major selling points. The duration which the battery of a gadget lasts is one of the things we all greatly consider when choosing which one to buy, so the long-lasting battery of Chromebooks is one more positive reason why you should buy a Chromebook.

Is a Chromebook easy to use?

If a large portion of one’s computer time is spent on word processors, email clients, and video streaming services, then you could make do with one of the best Chromebooks. They are extremely easy to use and it comes inside several affordable laptops that cost as little as $299. Chrome OS coolest feature is the OK, Google feature that allows users to ask Google Now questions. Using OK, Google is intelligent and can increase productivity, unlike other voice assistants.

Additionally, Chrome OS is great for working in side-by-side windows. All you need to do is drag a window to one side, where it snaps to a half-screen mode allowing for multitasking, which doesn’t just make your work faster but helps make you more efficient. It’s an aid in improving your efficiency and speed while working is a thing to consider and it’s also why you should buy a Chromebook.

How much storage is on the Chromebook?

If you prefer saving in the cloud and you want to get stuff done in a secure yet simple environment, you should buy a Chromebook. A Chromebook will suit you nicely. The system is designed to be used while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents are saved up in the cloud.

Chromebooks often don’t need much storage. Most packs have just 32GB of onboard storage. And since Chrome OS is Android -app friendly, it gives users the opportunity to use microSD cards for more storage. In addition, Google gives you 100GB of free Google Drive storage per Chromebook purchase, though that only lasts for two years, after which you’ll only have the standard 15GB of free space.

Can the Chromebook run Android apps?

Yes, it can. Since 2017 with the introduction of Android app enablement of Chromebooks, many Chromebooks now offer Android app presence. The tappable display of the new models of Chromebooks helps them take advantage of the platform’s latest major feature: Android apps.

Downloaded via the Google Play store on specific Chromebooks that support them, Android apps can now run in Chrome OS, but they’re not optimized for a keyboard and mouse, so you’ll need to use a touchscreen to make the most of them.

Chromebooks can run an ever-growing library of programs, such as productivity tools including Microsoft Office and Wunderlist, games such as NBA Jam, Fallout Shelter and Super Mario Run and even Instagram. And many of these programs have offline functionality.

What is the best Chromebook to buy?

The Google Pixelbook is a $900 Chromebook that is definitely the best Chromebook but it’s definitely not for everyone. The simple reason is that most people won’t need all of this power and storage for this operating system.

This Chrome device is a top-tier machine with a powerful i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. And Google makes it easy for Pixelbook owners to take advantage of their cloud services for even more storage.

The Google Pixelbook is a super thin and lightweight laptop with an aluminum body, Corning Gorilla Glass, touchscreen display, backlit keyboard and a battery that delivers up to 10 hours per charge. The Pixelbook has a unique 4-in-1 design that allows laptop, tablet, tent, and entertainment mode.

The biggest drawback of the Pixelbook is the high price point for a Chromebook. And this is only because there are hundreds of decent Chromebooks from other manufacturers that are less than $600.

What is the best Chromebook under $600?

The ASUS Chromebook Flip is less than $600 and is worth every penny, as it’s a convertible Chromebook that has a unique design and all of the wonderful Chrome OS benefits.

This ASUS Chromebook comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The metal body construction only enhances the appeal of this uniquely designed laptop. Additionally, it comes with two USB-C ports, a backlit keyboard, a strong crystal-clear Gorilla Glass display, and a battery life of around 10 hours.

However, the biggest drawback of this Chromebook is the processor and the fact that it doesn’t support microSD cards larger than 256GB (which sucks since these cards go up to 1TB now).

What is the best Chromebook under $400?

The Acer Chromebook 514 costs about $390 and is one of the best Chrome OS laptops available as it has a long-lasting battery life, quality keyboard, and a responsive touchscreen display.

This Acer Chromebook has been equipped with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Additionally, the large touchpad and a comfortable backlit keyboard is a bonus, this is something that other laptops often get wrong.

The only disadvantage with this Chromebook is the processor and subpar speakers. This may ruin your mobile gaming or video streaming experience.  The Acer Chromebook is still a good laptop for most users wanting a Chrome OS device to use at school or on the go.

Conclusion

Just as said earlier, Chromebooks are affordable while offering good performance. The introduction of Android apps has allowed Chromebooks to offer even more functionality. So if you’re looking for a simple way to get online and you like using Google services, you should get a Chromebook.

As for us, the latest Acer Chromebook is our new favorite laptop to use on the go as it has enough RAM and storage for our blogging and video streaming sessions.
